An Introduction to the Labouchere System

by on May 24, 2012

This roulette system has often been called the system James Bond after the famous spy.  I’m not quite sure what would have attracted everyone’s favorite spy to this system though.  The Labouchere System is actually a negative progression system, which means that when you lose you automatically increase your stake to compensate. The theory behind this is that when you do win, the increased stake will have covered your previous losses.

The Labouchere strategy is not actually that difficult, but it sometimes helps to use a pen and pencil to visualise it.  To keep things simple let’s use a simple sequence of 1,2,3,3,4.

First of all to decide our stake, add the first and last number of your sequence – in our case it will be 1+4 to equal a five dollar stake.  If you’re lucky and win on your initial spin, then you need to cross off the two numbers you ‘used’ in our sequence – i.e. 4 and 1.

You then change your stake to the new first and last numbers – which in our example is 2 and 3 – so 5 dollars is again our bet. This continues until you have only one number remaining, which is actually your last bet.  Unfortunately, certainly in my experience, you’re not going to win all the time – so what happens when you lose?

Well it’s quite simple, when the inevitable does happen you add the number to the end of the sequence rather than removing it.  So in our initial example, if we lost on the first spin we’d add 5 to the end of our sequence – 1 + 4 = 5.   When a sequence is completed then you can start a fresh one.

Labouchere sounds simple enough so what’s the theory exactly ?

Well the basic idea is that if you remove two numbers for a win and add one number for a loss. It is possible to complete the list and remove all the numbers and win your desired amount.Of course your sequence is crucial to this system. The basic concept is that the larger the numbers, the bigger the potential profits – but the larger the risk. As in any game of roulette – and unlucky losing sequence can be rather painful.

Again, remember the Labouchere Strategy won’t actually alter the odds. However it can add a discipline to your game which could benefit you.  It is also helpful for helping you stick to your budget and add a method to your bets. It’s quite a fun roulette system to play as long as you don’t over stretch yourself. But remember unless you have the expense account of James Bond, don’t get carried away with this system – it doesn’t guarantee winning.
